Shop and eat locally: the trendy way to create a one-of-a-kind neighborhood. But it’s more than that if you love living and working on the Peninsula in the Bay Area. At J+J Team Homes, as life-long residents, we love to shop and eat locally. In this blog, we swing by a few of our favorite local spots in downtown Burlingame. In addition to a hot tip or two, we also throw out a few menu recommendations too.

Shop and Eat Locally
Mints and Honey

Some might call Mints and Honey the Peninsula’s best-kept secret – we call it the cutest little coffee shop. Whether you are Thirsty or Hungry (their menu titles!), you better be both when you walk in the door because everything is that good. Its fun to shop and eat locally at Mints and Honey because the coffees and teas feel one of a kind. It might be hard to pick a few recommendations without listing the entire Hungry menu, but we’ll try:
- Waffe with Ricotta & Honey & Almonds (homemade batter!)
- Waffle with Rose & Strawberry (homemade batter!)
- Toast with Bananas & Peanut Butter
- Toast with Mango & Tanjin
HOT TIP: If you can’t make your mind with the waffles or toast – go with the sampler – you can choose any four.
Mints and Honey also caters events large and small. Check out their catering menu. HOT TIP: Consider renting their San Carlos location – they host numerous kid and adult birthday parties, bridal showers, afternoon tea parties as well as baby showers.

The Originial Royal Donut

The freshest Vietnamese sandwiches, Iced Boba Milk Teas and Extra Large Donuts. It sounds like heaven, doesn’t it? At the Originial Royal Donut, the fresh baked croissants and handmade doughnuts are all made daily in house. Next to the Burlingame train station, you might just be tempted to hop off the train for a donut if you are riding through town. But don’t worry, another train will come along soon. And want to make some friends on the train? Buy some to take with you, remember: shop and eat locally is a way of life.
HOT TIP: They are open 24 hours a day Wednesday – Sunday and 4 am – 9 pm Monday and Tuesday.

Philz

A San Francisco based tradition, Burlingame features a downtown Philz location as well. Founded by Phil Jaber in the vibrant San Francisco Mission District, they have always had one goal in mind: to better the days of everyone who walks in. They use 12 secret coffee blends from countries including Brazil, Colombia, Ethiopia and Yemen. We always feel fancy when we are greeted by the barista who helps us by suggesting blends and specialty drinks. You can customize your blend as well. People say there are more than 4 million drink versions in their database.
Try the Ice Mint Mojito iced coffee drink. And ask for it the House Way. You won’t be sorry.

Salt and Straw

In downtown Burlingame, Salt and Straw is famous for its Bay-Area inspired flavors. The kiddos will love the ice cream flavors and rainbow sprinkles. We love that they work with local makers, farmers, and chefs who inspire them to tell stories through their ever-changing menu of new flavors. Even better, they deliver locally too.
Our favorite flavors:

Blue Line Pizza

In Burlingame, Blue Line Pizaaz features a large bar (with tv to watch the games) and a covered back patio (with heaters). The Blue Star and the Pesto Chicken are two of our favorites; and the deep dish is very Chicago.
Crust options include:
- Deep Dish
- Thin

- Cauliflower
Toppings include the following dietary options:

Joe & the Juice

While Joe & the Juice wasn’t launched locally in the Bay Area, we love that they are committed to keeping a 2% Food Waste Score by making everything fresh to order. We are also inspired that they continue to step up their recycling game. Learn more by clicking here.
Our recommendations (in this order!):
- Eat the Avocado Sandwich with Mozzarella and Fresh Tomato!
